First Day of Class!

22 Aug

I am so glad that my Mon/Thu classes start at 11:40am because I finally think I caught up on sleep! I woke up about 9:15, got ready, ate some breakfast (this is mysli which is pronounced like mooslih, with some oats mixed in because mysli is more expensive; it's like a granola cereal with some dried fruit in it, and then instead of milk I used some strawberry yogurt, but the yogurt here is more liquidy so it works).

Then I packed my lunch (peanut butter and jelly and nutella :) and a banana)

And I found my missing rings this morning in my makeup bag...

So I got on the bus on time and the train on time and went to DIS and met some people that are also living in Albertslund as I was killing some time before my first class, Medical Ethics. There was a reading or two due, and I finished it on the train. So far my time management has been alright :)

Medical Ethics is filled with kids who want to be doctors and a couple who are just interested in the topic. I'm kind of glad to be meeting people that I'll be seeing more often, like every class period instead of randomly during orientation.

I really liked the first class and I felt like I was prepared and that I could contribute, although most kids come from places like Columbia University and Macalester, which is slightly intimidating, almost worse than being at Mac.

Then I went to Danish Language and Culture and I know that class is going to be the most fun I have already. We need to look up Danish youtube songs and read culture articles in English and I feel comfortable learning new languages so this class is pretty much perfect for me. Especially since everything else is  so sciencey.

Then I thought I'd try to pick up my bike from the shop, so I passed through St. Peter's Church square on my way.

And the guy at the bike shop had so many receipts to dig through trying to find mine! I got kind of worried for a minute. Finally, he asked me what I thought of taking the pink bike. THAT WAS THE ONE I WANTED! Heavy score. I was really afraid of having a black bike because there are so many bikes and so many of them are black or almost black. He gave me some lights to velcro on for nighttime so I don't get fined and I got a front basket and then I rode away to test it out.

I was really surprised that the front brakes were so weak so I went back and asked him if he would tighten them, but he said that I'm supposed to mainly rely on the brakes that work when you pedal backward, like what I had when I was little but not what's on my mountain bike at home. The lock is built in and is kind of complicated but I figured it out. There are two keys, and I think they're the same, so I left one in my room and put one with my house key. I'm so smart. Unless they aren't the same...but I think they are.

On my bike ride back to the train station to go home, I saw a public outdoor bathroom. I had to try it.

It's like a fancy, permanent porta-potty.

The flush button was above the sink, and it was flat against the metal so I was looking for where to flush FOREVER! The sink worked by motion sensing so you put your hand under the left for water, the middle for soap and the right for air. I accidentally had the water and air going at the same time and there was no soap. Oops. At least now I know how to use it.

I can bike, but biking in traffic with a million bikers and cars is something else. It takes so much skill and probably a lot of practice. Especially with all the construction everywhere. This is the entrance to Tivoli, and it would be beautiful if there weren't so many machines and dirt around it.

So the S-trains have free bike transportation, and so there are slots to stick your wheel between and they're like PVC pipe or something that holds on tightly to your bike and keeps it from moving, unless you don't put it in all the way like some other girl on the train. Her bike kept hitting other peoples bikes haha.

This is the weird guy in a bath/shower fountain statue thing just outside the tunnel to the train platform. I love it. It's like, what?

So I got home and was home alone until about 9 and that was nice, I got a lot of stuff done. This is the balcony/deck that I have a door to in my room. I'm the only one :) When Simon comes back, I suppose he could get to it if he crawled out his window, but he's like 7 feet tall so... It's mine :)

And this is the view from my balcony.

And also on my bike ride home, I passed a currency exchange and got my first kroner!
Finally, haha, I've been here like 5 days and have used my cards to get by but it felt touristy and now I feel local. Also, there was little or no commission charged so I got 265 DKK for $50, and when I type it into google it says that 265 DKK is about $47.50. I think Chloe went somewhere else and she said she got jipped, so I'm lucky I guess :)

I think I might open a Danish bank account. I'd like to only have one card and have free atms.

1:39am

I need to get stuff done earlier. I have to wake up around 6am haha.
